Workshops Descriptions
Introduction to the Internet and World Wide Web
This workshop will introduce participants to the Internet
and basics of the World Wide Web. An objective of this course
is to give the basic components for searching the Internet
and Web through PowerPoint slides, hands-on exercises, and
tutorials. Class activities include the Internet's history,
connecting to the Internet, URL address formats, basic search
tools, browser features, purpose of a homepage, function of
hypertext links, search techniques, search engine features,
evaluating Internet sources, citing Internet sources, purpose
of bookmarks, and saving documents.
Prerequisite: Familiarity with Windows and a mouse
Session: A minimum of 4 hours is recommended
Navigating the Internet
This workshop is intended for participants who have mastered
the basics of using the World Wide Web. An objective of this
course is to enhance skills to efficiently navigate and search
the Web. Course activities include selecting and evaluating
search engines, developing search strategies, searching with
URLs, locating online reviewing sources, evaluating sources
located, citing Internet sources, managing bookmarks, email
programs, and discussion groups.
Prerequisite: Introduction to the Internet and World
Wide Web or a comparable course
Session: A minimum of 4 hours is recommended
Search Tools: How to Use the World Wide Web
Participants will build on the skills previously acquired
to search for specific topics. An objective of this class is
to develop confidence and skills to search the Internet for
topical information. Participants will use a variety of tools
to find Internet sites and reference information on a subject.
Emphasis will be on developing an effective search strategy,
using libraries and database resources, evaluating the results,
selecting and using the appropriate electronic style guide for
citing the sources, sending email, locating discussion groups,
and saving sources as a bookmark and text file.
Prerequisite: Introduction to the Internet and World
Wide Web or a comparable course and experience searching
the Web.
Session: A minimum of 4 hours is recommended
Teaching the Internet: Training the Trainers
This workshop is designed to provide information and resources
needed as a trainer to teach the Internet. The class covers
developing lesson plans, using Internet sites, PowerPoint
slides, books, and articles.
Prerequisite: Knowledge of basic Internet tools,
search strategies, and Windows
Session: A 1/2 day lecture, demonstration, and hands-on
exercises
